Aristoteles is a fully active (line level crossover) full range open baffle design with real dipole behavior over a wide frequency range.
Primary Design Goals (in arbitrary order):
- low distortion
- little stored energy
- horizontal dipole behavior as far up in frequency as possible with a smooth transition into the region where the tweeters become more directional
- at least "close to live" output capability
(a speaker that cannot go loud is like a nice car that cannot go fast)
- WAF (Woman/Wife acceptance factor) that ranges around "living room suitable" or higher
In total, it should sound as natural/believable as possible.
Version 0.5
I see the following items as key elements to the design:
- The ScanSpeak 18WU Illuminator mid-woofer has a very open basket and magnet structure and as a result the frequency response of the backside rolls off relatively late (2,5KHz+). It is planned to place it on a relatively slim baffle. The advertised linear xmax might be a bit exaggerated. But with a worst case +-6mm it still outperforms virtually all of its competitors of that size. In addition, the measured total quality Qt is in fact much higher, which turns out to be quite handy for open baffle applications.
- The D3004/660000 Illuminator tweeter has quite a shallow design and it features a low Fs and maintains low distortion even at high sound levels.
There are no plans to add subs to the dipole. The output of the 2 Peerless 835016 (per side) is fully satisfying in terms of quality and quantity. The ASP contains an active balanced input stage with bootstrapping for the common mode signal and is fed by Sokrates the pre-amp. It is planned to integrate the ASP and five DIY power amps (developed by MikeB) into one box per speaker with a small footprint.
Status of the project:
- 12-Sep-2011: New panel and some preliminary measurements posted.
ASP 0.41:

Version 0.4

Version 0.3 Although 0.3 shows better simulation results for the tweeter, 0.4 sounds better.

Version 0.2 In version 0.2, I reduced the distance between tweeter and mid woofer. But it sounded strange. It was less airy and it sounded more compact, which was apparent right away (during the first few seconds of listening to music).
